Liepaja University is accredited state higher educational establishment, which implements study programmes at all three study levels: basic studies, Master and Doctorate studies.

Some historical facts:
The higher educational establishment was founded in 1954 on the basis of Teacher Training Institute.
Its original name – Liepaja Pedagogical Institute.
The first campus – Baseina iela 9, Liepaja.
For long years the educational establishment offered education in educational science. Concurrently with teacher training study programmes a broad spectrum of non-pedagogical study programmes has been offered since 1990.
In the course of time the name of the higher educational establishment has changed more than once. On 16 July 2008 Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy became Liepaja University (LiepU).

The Latvia University of Agriculture is a higher education and science establishment of the Republic of Latvia, where scientific research as well as academic and professional study programmes are carried out.

The main goal of the University is to create intellectual potential for providing sustainable development of Latvia and its countryside in particular while becoming and up-to date, internationally recognized and prestigious university, which actively integrates into the united European space of higher education and science.

The history of the university dates back to 1863 when the Department of Agriculture was established in the Riga Polytechnicum.

In 1919 the University of Latvia opened the Department of Agriculture the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

In 1936 the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia decided to transfer the Agriculture Faculty of the University to Latvia to Jelgava, thus founding a new higher education establishment – the Jelgava Academy of Agriculture. On 23, 1938 Kārlis Ulmanis, the president and prime minister, proclaimed “The Constitution of the Jelgava Academy of Agriculture”.

On July 3, 1939, a new academic institution with two faculties: agriculture and forestry, was opened in Jelgava.

In July 1944, after the Jelgava Palace was burnt down, the Academy ceased to exist. It was renewed in Riga as the Latvia Academy of Agriculture.

On October 19, 1957 the Council of Ministers of the Latvian Soviet Socialistic Republic accepted a decision to transfer the Academy to Jelgava. Till 1964 all the faculties of the Academy were transferred to Jelgava.

In 1991 according to the decision of the Academy’s Council, the Latvia Academy of Agriculture was renamed as the Latvia University on Agriculture.

In 1994 the Senate of the Latvia University of Agriculture approved the symbols of the University: the flag, the emblem, the attire of the administration and academic staff.
In 2001 the higher educational establishment received the state accreditation as a University.
In 2005 the Award of the Year was initiated.In 2007 the Lifelong Education Centre was established.
In 2010 the distance and e-learning form were introduced.
In 2012 the University approved the official hymn which had been composed in 1940 by Jēkabs Mediņš as a dedication to the Latvia Academy of Agriculture.

Information About Latvia

Latvia’s internet speeds are among the fastest in the world, averaging 13.8MB/s, compared to 11.6 in the UK, 11.9 in the US, 7.5 in France, 3.4 in Brazil and 1.7 in Egypt.
Nearly 1 in 3 of Latvia’s two million residents lives in the capital, Riga, sometimes described as the Paris of the North.An estimated 12.5 per cent of Latvia’s population were killed during the Second World War, the highest percentage of any European nation bar Poland and Lithuania. As many as 190,000 were subsequently imprisoned in Soviet gulags between 1945 and 1952.
Latvia has 12,000 rivers and 3,000 small lakes – perfect if you like messing about in boats.
It’s a decent bet for an offbeat beach holiday, if you don’t mind the chilly water, with 330 miles of sandy beaches. Just west of Riga lies Jurmala, a summer holiday favourite of Brezhnev and Khrushchev. Temperatures can top 20C in high summer, so you might even need sun cream.Around 54 per cent of Latvia is forest, making it one of Europe’s greenest countries, while 10 per cent is bog. It’s home to black storks, lesser spotted eagles, otters, beaver, lynx, and wolves, and great concentrations of deer, wild boar, elk and red fox.
Around 20 per cent of Latvia is protected. There are four national parks, 42 nature parks, 260 nature reserves, 355 nature monuments, seven protected marine areas, 24 micro reserves and a biosphere reserve. It topped the Environmental Performance Index in 2012.Latvia’s national bird is the white wagtail, so called because it almost constantly wriggles its backside.
Riga is one of 14 capital cities that consists of only four letters. The others are Rome, Oslo, Lima, Baku, Bern, Kiev, Juba, Male, Doha, Lome, Suva, Dili and Apia.
